About Macumba Online
A site for entertainment and reading about Afro-Brazilian culture and traditions. Here you will find the Virtual Terreiro and introductory guides to orixás, spirit guides, history and religious vocabulary.
The purpose of the project
We want to make these subjects more accessible while respecting the people and communities who sustain their traditions. The site's name also welcomes people arriving out of curiosity: from there, links lead to explanations and references for further reading.
Macumba Online does not represent a terreiro, religious nation or lineage. These are introductory texts, not a replacement for learning with practitioners, communities and researchers.
What is the Virtual Terreiro?
It is a free entertainment experience. The form creates a fictional message in your browser; it does not perform rituals, offer spiritual consultations or send a request to a terreiro. Its themes and results are part of a playful experience.
This experience is not a description of how these religions are practiced. To understand their differences, explore our guides to culture and traditions.
Editorial responsibility and approach
The Macumba Online project is responsible for publication. Guides credited to that name have institutional authorship; this credit does not imply academic qualifications, religious initiation or specialist review.
- Identifiable references. New guides identify the research and institutional records supporting their explanations, with links in the text and a list of sources.
- Context matters. An ethnography describes the communities studied. One terreiro's interpretation is not presented as a rule for every community.
- Different kinds of accounts. Oral traditions, religious narratives and historical documentation have their own contexts. When an origin is uncertain, that uncertainty should be stated.
- Update dates. Each guide's date reflects a change to its content. Earlier texts remain subject to revision and should not be treated as definitive catalogs of practices.
- Use of tools. AI tools assisted with research, writing and organization of these guides, and with their language adaptations. References are available for checking; no invited religious authority reviewed the material.
Editorial criteria first published on . English and Spanish editions added on September 24, 2026. Original religious names are retained, with explanations for readers unfamiliar with the Brazilian context.

Found an inaccuracy? Tell us the page, the passage and, if possible, a reference or the context of the tradition concerned. Contributions from practitioners and researchers help identify what needs correction or clearer explanation.
